about

While I made "Terror Circuit" in 2007, only 3 years after "Video Game Music," it felt like a lifetime spanned the gulf between them. Somewhere in the midst of these two albums I did a group of songs that I actually sang on, which I put a great deal of work into but didn't end up liking very much. I had a friend (rest in peace) help me with production on that one; I wasn't used to working with others on my music or relinquishing any control. So when it came time to once again hunch over a computer alone and make the songs for Terror Circuit, it felt something like a return to form. Which I suppose explains why it sounds similar to VGM, though I never would have said so at the time. After all, I had received an education in audio engineering in the interim--my ears were *trained*. I had gone through so much Life Shit. A turbulent relationship happened between the two albums, which ended while I was still completing TC. It did one hell of a number on me. These songs were written in some of the most isolated times of my life as I sat, depressed out of my mind, on the floor of a garbage basement apartment in Chicago. Which makes the upbeat-to-the-point-of-cheesy songs all the more strange. Of course, there is plenty of angry industrial shit for contrast. Also, way more piano than I ever intended. While similar to VGM, these songs do show some increase in sophistication. Stereo field and dynamic range are used better. 8-bit makes a comeback, but the approximation to actual NES sounds is more spot-on this time--thanks to sampling plugins. Again, we have only one instance of human(ish) voice, on a creepy track in which I chop up and reverse myself over a choir of robot cultists. I don't think many people ever actually heard this one. I came home after a mental breakdown and gave a CD to my mom. The album pretty much languished after that. I purposely left it unmastered, keeping all the mixes below 0dB like a good audio student, but it sounds pretty good cranked. Once again, these had titles, but I forgot them. But who needs titles for instrumentals? Before this writing in 2018, these songs barely had context. Hope I didn't ruin the fun.
